New Rider Joins the Unit

July 1, 2018: Sergeant Shawn Engel recently completed his Mounted Patrol training and joins the unit as a rider. Keep an eye out on the street for him and his partner Bubba as they patrol the city!


Cooper’s Sponsor Visit

On June 21 the Sheehan's- John (middle) and his daughter Mary, had their annual sponsorship visit today! They sponsor police horse Cooper and they shared the visit with staff and patients at the UW Health American Center - complete with horse shaped cookies! Thank you John and Mary for your continued support of the unit!


Linda Parelli Masterclass

June 1st - 3rd brought a great opportunity to the unit. Officer’s Sarah Mulry and Casey Wahl along with Bubba and Doc attended a three day horsemanship clinic with Linda Parelli. It was a FANTASTIC educational opportunity for both horse and human.


The Friends of Madison Mounted Horse Patrol funded the training through generous donations by YOU!! The support the police horses receive in furthering their education goals is essential to progressing the unit's knowledge in horsemanship!



Agrace Hospice Center Visit

On May 15th unit horses and officers were once again able to partnership with Agrace Hospice Center in Fitchburg with a visit with patients, families and the wonderful staff. Chevy and Leo brightened everyones day with gentle nudges and snuggles.

Large Animal Decontamination

On May 9th the Madison Police horses assisted UW Madison Veterinary students on large animal decontamination procedures. The course was called "Disaster Medicine", which is a selective course for the students. The scenarios involved equine health assessments while the students were dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE).


In the event of a natural disaster or other contaminating situation, the students need to consider situational awareness and have a good working knowledge of animal behavior and handling skills, to keep themselves and the animal safe. The Madison Police Mounted Unit was happy to assist in the education of future veterinarians!

FOMM Board Given Award

The Madison Police Department recognized the Friends of Madison Mounted Horse Patrol at its annual awards ceremony on May 8th.  Current and former board members were recognized for all the support they give to the Mounted Unit through fundraising and community outreach.

Search and Rescue Training

Officer Molly Thomson attended Search and Rescue Management Training April 20-22 in Ely, MN. With the skills learned at this training,


Midwest Horse Fair 2018

Thank you to everyone that came out to meet the horses at the Midwest Horse Fair! $9,000 was raised through donations, raffle tickets and apparel. This will ensure that the horses and riders are able to continue their work throughout the City of Madison.


Penny Conn was the winner of the custom made armoire raffled off. Congratulations!
